Using the model of Murphy and Staples, Zimmerman found that gasoline consumption peaks in the middle stages of the life cycle, when children are in their late teens. If this finding is widespread and households exchange between contexts of energy use, households in later life cycle stages that spend more time at home can be expected to use more energy for heating than households in the early stages. This suggests that further analysis of Fritsche’s approach using only the cost of heat could lead to completely different results. Families in the middle stages of the family life cycle, where family size and dwelling size can be expected to peak, exhibit above-average economic behavior and heating costs very close to average. The early stages of the life cycle, which show little interest in conservation, also have low costs. This will be suitable for small houses, rental apartments and apartment buildings that will improve heating efficiency and reduce conservation options related to insulation and stove modifications.
